Cardinal will provide daily fresh food deliveries to 7-Eleven® stores

Concord, N.C. -- Aug 6, 2002 -- Cardinal Logistics Management, announced today that it has been selected by 7-Eleven, Inc. (NYSE: SE), the world’s largest convenience retailer, to offer third-party logistics services from a new distribution facility in Fullerton, Calif., for approximately 700 7-Eleven stores in Southern California.

Cardinal will assist in bringing 7-Eleven’s proprietary consolidated distribution center (CDC) concept to Southern California. 7-Eleven began development of its CDC system of daily delivery in 1994. The CDC, as a merchandising tool, enables participating stores to receive daily deliveries of high-quality, “freshness-sensitive” products overnight -- just before their peak selling period.

Individual stores will place orders for products including dairy, 7-Eleven proprietary Big Eats™ Deli sandwiches, World Ovens™ pastries, produce, bread and certain beverages by 10 a.m. and will receive delivery by 5 a.m. the next day. Cardinal will process the inbound vendor orders through the CDC in Fullerton.

The operation will be phased in from early September to early November. This follows last year’s announcement of 7-Eleven awarding Cardinal the contract to provide enhanced delivery services for 627 7-Eleven stores in the Northeast.

“Cardinal is committed to creating first-tier logistics solutions that focus on distinctive, individual needs,” said Cardinal’s chairman, Vin McLoughlin. “7-Eleven is a company that truly realizes the importance of demand chain solutions for their customers. Consistent, reliable daily service of fresh bakery and sandwich products to stores plays an important role in 7-Eleven’s marketing strategy, and Cardinal is thrilled to be a partner with such a forward looking organization.”

“The Cardinal team understands our strategic direction in providing daily, fresh delivery to our stores,” said Wayne Paul, 7-Eleven’s vice president, logistics. “Today’s announcement of the Southern California CDC contract in conjunction with the Northeast contract clearly reflects our confidence in the capabilities of Cardinal. The mission of the demand chain team at 7-Eleven is to support retailer initiative, 7-Eleven approach to retailing, which puts the responsibility of ordering and merchandising for each store in the hands of store operators, who best know their customers.”
